Debate against hanging? Why?!
(By Jyoti Narula)
New Delhi. May ,2010.
Every time a death sentence in pronounced on a dreaded killer or terrorist, the 'so-called intelligentia' of the country gets together and starts a debate on whether the death sentence should be stopped altogether! For God sake do not start it in case of kasab... Let me be very straight-forward regarding this. My view is that if you are a bit lenient towards the likes of Kasab, then you are directly and not indirectly being "unfair, insensitive cruel and even barbaric" towards the likes of little Moshe. Yes, little Moshe, do you care to remember him? He was a 2 year old Israeli child, who had come to visit your country, lost both his parents in the hands of this 'kasai' named Kasab and was seen crying and shouting unconsolably..."Emmmaaaa....." (mama). If you can easily forget and overcome that shout, you may debate against hanging of Kasab and likes.
What I am trying to emphasize is, are we as a nation being 'selfish and inconsiderate' towards each other? This is heart-breaking that only the close relatives of the dead are seen advocating the death sentence loud and clear (I know millions of those not concerned do so also) but still millions of others are seen either being 'indifferent' towards the matter or worse 'become intellectuals' and start discussing the 'pros and cons' of the sentence.
Here I am addressing only this 'intelligentia' and the 'care-a-damn' types. I request them to use their power of imagination. Weak-hearts must 'abstain' from the following.
"Close your eyes and start imagining. Imagine your own loved ones (if you love someone at all!) Imagine your child, your wife/husband, you parents, your beloved BF or GF, your brother/sister....or anyone you cannot think of your life without. Now imagine going out with him/her. You left him/her for a while to bring say, an ice cream for him/her. Okay? ready?? Now imagine him/her to be suddenly lying in a pool of blood after a loud bang. Your loved one who was just smiling at you has been reduced to a 'mass of flesh and blood'. The hand you were holding minutes ago when you left him/her, the same hand is nowhere to be found with this 'body'.....imagine....imagine and then honestly tell me, would you like to ever be lenient the perpetrator? If you really can, only then you can think about talking like an 'intellectual'.
But sorry, you still have no right to be such an 'intellectual'. Even if this is in your capacity to 'forgive and forget', still it may not be the capacity of many. You have no right to advocate the forgiveness of those who destroyed their lives forever! Imagine what happens after you succeed in your campaign. Imagine that you are successful in getting the death penalty abolished. Now get forward in time and imagine the year 2023. Kasab has finished his life sentence....he is a healthy 35 year old ...he goes back to Pakistan...falicitated there...the government of Pakistan gives his crores of rupees as reward....a job...settles his life...projects him as a 'public hero'...though they are doing it on some other pretext. Technically they are able to honor him since he has completed his punishment and has right to a new life in the eyes of the international community as well. So he is then married off to some very beatiful Pakistani girl in her late teens or early twenties and...and he lives happily ever after.. ..as the 'old widow' Mrs Kavita Karkare, who was the 'young widow' of our own shaheed Mr. Hemant Karkare in 2008 watches it all on TV sitting all alone in her deserted home....her wounds open all over again.
There was a 13 year old girl and her 9 year old brother who became orphans in Sarojini Nagar blast in 2005. A few days later, their grand father also died of shock that he had faced losing his only son. Now imagine that the same day you and your spouse also went out to Sarojini Nagar, not to return ever. Imagine then how would your neighbors have taken care of your 9 year old boy and worse "took special care" of your 13 year old girl! Where would she be and what would she be doing now in the age of 18?! As a parent you must be knowing how hard it is to protect and bring up your daughter even if you are alive and healthy?! What after both of you die together? I sincerely hope the girl I am referring to has found a right mentor and leading a normal life.
If this can not move you, I am afraid nothing can. You can be an 'intellectual'. But if this thing does move your inner conscience, you wouldn't care about any 'irrelevant things' like 'sending a message', 'international message', 'being called a cruel state or opposite, being called a banana state' etc etc. Feel others' pain and the God feels your pain, as they say, "vaishnav jan to tene kahiye je peer parai jaane re" (True human being in the eyes of God is that who feels the others' pain.) If you think that the death sentence does not act as a deterrent, I again refer to 'imagine the scenario' when Kasab returns to Pakistan. The 'jehadis' and ISI there will get a million more Kasabs to destroy India. What they would tell them is, "Look, go to India... do this...get caught...spend 14 years there...become a grown up man there...come back and become what Kasab is today!! A hero, enjoying his life!!"
So those who think that death sentence doesn't act as a deterrant, I 'pooh-pooh' their thoughts.
If you are still in two thoughts, I ask you to imagine, or in way try to one more thing. Ask someone to tie your right arm along with your chest and your left leg tied bend by knee. Now try spending one single day! If you are still not satisfied, 'blind-fold' yourself the next day and then ask yourself whether or not you would like a death sentence for those who would have made you like that for your entire life! Imagine and come to a conclusion before I travel down to some more 'parts' of your body...
For those who say that hanging is a sort or revenge and so we must abolish it, my view is, 'let it be!' Even if it is!! We are ordinary human beings and not 'saadhu saints' from himalayas. The thought of not being able to have even a little revenge for such heinous crime been perpetrated on us can further put us in unending depression in addition to the loss we suffer. Again imagine Mrs. Karkare sitting and watching Kasab on TV....
